Curious minds are rewarded with curious answers in a fantastical bedtime book by Mac Barnett and Isabelle Arsenault.

Why is the ocean blue? What is the rain? What happened to the dinosaurs? It might be time for bed, but one child is too full of questions about the world to go to sleep just yet. Little ones and their parents will be charmed and delighted as a patient father offers up increasingly creative responses to his child’s nighttime wonderings. Any child who has ever asked “Why?” — and any parent who has attempted an explanation — will recognize themselves in this sweet storybook for dreamers who are looking for answers beyond “Just because.”

Isabelle Arsenault’s richly graphic illustrations for “Just Because” perfectly meld the fanciful and the literal — just the way a child’s imagination does, the judges felt. To paraphrase an old movie ad: After spending time with this beautifully designed book, you will believe that fish sing the blues and trees set their leaves on fire.

“I worked on a very special custom drawing table that my father built and gave to me for my birthday that year. It’s an inclined table that I described to him and that he created, adding even more cool features. It was very interesting to inaugurate the table with this book project, which I end up dedicating to my highly creative dad.

I received the manuscript for ‘Just Because’ and, of course, I liked the story — its tone, the absurd sense of humor and the ending. The manuscript came along with two vintage images, some visual references suggested by the writer, Mac Barnett. I liked these images very much. They looked as if they came from an old documentary book or encyclopedia. The project started taking shape in my mind. I wanted to find an approach that would be classic and warm but still contemporary. I could say this one was inspired by the old documentary books of my childhood.”
